I believe I said Mt LeConte is the highest mountain in Tennessee, which it is. Clingman’s dome is just across the NC border.

  • vanhalen1583 says:

when the guys r standing in front of the helicopter you can see my house in the background ps. clingmans dome is the tallest not rocky top

  • WhirldTraveler says:

Mt Leconte is the highest mountain in Tennessee… I believe that’s what I said… I could be wrong.

zx6rr5, you’re wrong! Clingmans Dome is the highest mountain in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at 6643 foot. The mountain peak is a result of other elevated landforms. However, Mt LeConte at 6593 foot, 4 miles away, is the “tallest” mountain in the Park, that stands alone without any assistance from other elevated landforms.
To characterize, you are 6 foot 4 in a room of people all 5 foot tall, you are the tallest. If a 5 foot tall person stands on a chair, he/she is the highest!

The last time i took a helicopter scenic tour was back in 1990 when i was in the 3rd grade. Now that i’m 28 and graduated in ‘ 05, i must do this again. I remembered it being fun, but also thrilling too, being somewhat afraid of heights. LOL Though, the chair lift ride in Gatlinburg does Not scare me one bit, but being up in a helicopter does. I rode on 2 different versions back then, the enclosed chopper like seen in this video, and the chopper like from the old MASH TV show, no doors.

Well now I’m confused. Every map I have ever looked at all my life shows Mt.Leconte at 6593 ft. Clingman’s Dome is 6643 ft. If Mt. Leconte was the highest point, wouldn’t it be shown as 6643 ft? Also, the labeling of elevation is always on a separate mountain away from Clingman’s Dome. Even at the tower on top of Clingman’s Dome, the panoramic pictures name Mt. Leconte in the distance. It is a totally different and separated mountain that rises and drops dramatically.

  • zx6rr5 says:

One correction wildmandigging: Clingman’s Dome is not a mountain. It is on the highest point of a mountain that happens to be named Mt. Leconte. So the the guy in the vid is actually correct.

  • wildmandigging says:

One correction: Mt. Leconte is not the highest mountain in Tennessee, Clingman’s Dome is. Certainly looks like fun though.

  • Mhebner23 says:

Me and my fiance did that yesterday, it was so much fun.

In August of 2008 my girlfriend got me a flight for 1/2 hour for my birthday. It was the best gift I have ever received. We enoyed the flight so much we went back the next day and took the flight over Douglas lake. The first one was over Gatlinburg and the park. This is something everyone should do at least once when they are in this area. It is truly the the thrill of a lifetime. I can’t wait to go back and do it again.
