Of the islands I’ve been to…

Kauai is my favorite. It’s small enough that you can get around easily but not usually too crowded. The south side of the island is kind of touristy, but the north isn’t as much. You can learn to surf, walk/hike to some beautiful waterfalls, and even take helicopter tours.

Hawaii (the big island) is my second favorite. Kona is fantastic. The south tip of the island is also great and has some really cool black sand beaches, and there are sea turtles that you can see while snorkeling. You can also go to the Kilauea (sp?) volcano crater.

Oahu was my least favorite. The few days I were there were really hot and dry, though, so it might be nicer if the weather were a bit cooler. But I didn’t like Honolulu or Diamondhead, and I thought Waikiki was extremely overhyped.

It also depends on your situation. If you’re taking younger kids, I’d recommend the big island. Tweens and teens would probably like Kauai better. And no kids? I’d still say Kauai. But there are some other smaller islands that you should look into as well (Molokai, Lanai, etc.)

No, so long as you are an American citizen, you shouldn’t be asked for anything like a passport since they are both US states.

Question by : What’s the best website when planning for a vacation in Hawaii?

I found this link before with all the good stuff in it but unfortunately, I couldn’t remember the name of the site after I reformatted my computer. It includes a map where you can filter the activities you want to do( local and featured ones), local radio stations, links to other great websites about Hawaii… etc. On the map portion, it’ll even give some brief info about the place and its website.

Question by Sweet Pea: Fist Hawaii vacation trip, possible to The Big Island, what travel suggestions?

Anybody know of any good websites that cut you a good deal besides expedia and travelocity? I found plesent holidays website and they seem decent. What suggestions could you give a clueless girl??

Well, if your trip will be confined to the Big Island, then by all means arrange your flights so that you arrive and leave out of Kona (KOA) and save the hassle of connecting in Honolulu. If you go thru Honolulu, its a separate terminal that handles inter-island flights.

Check this section for earlier questions if you’re looking for an inexpensive hotel room in Kailua-Kona. There was a question in the last week and a couple of good suggestions were given.

As for car rentals, I have used www.carrentalsinhawaii.com on several trips and found them to have some of the better rental rates. Shop early, shop frequently and keep checking rates, which tend to fluctuate quite a bit and since they don’t charge a penalty for changing, take advantage of any dip in the rates.

And, of course, travel on Mon-Thurs will tend to get you the best rates on airline tickets, as will travelling after August, when the demand is lower until December. Same is true for hotel room availability and rates.

through my job I won a 5 day 4 night all expenses paid to anywhere in the U.S. 50 states we chose hawaii I would like to know what single island and hotel we should go to so we can maximize the 5 days. we like beaches, snorkeling and fishing we get a rental car also

Aloha,

I suggest the Island of Maui because the beaches are absolutely beautiful. I’ve personally never had to stay in a hotel on any of the islands because I have family on every island that is inhabitable; but I hear that the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel is really nice.

Although if you are looking for the island that you can do many things–I suggest you go to O’ahu. There is much more nightlife on O’ahu. The Hilton is a really nice hotel and it has its own village of shops and restaurants.

Pretty much all islands are nice as far as beaches go. They all have their own beauty.

I was in Oahu this past May and it was gorgeous weather.

The funny thing about Hawaii is this: because it is mountainous, the clouds are often trapped on the windward side of the mountains. So you can travel 5-10 minutes and go from rain to clear skies and sunshine. As an example, I stayed near Kailua and Kaneohe, and it was often rainy (because it’s a tropical rainforest area). I went down to Waikiki 20 mins away and it was sunny!

Now I am currently in a Physical Geography Class. Can anyone help me with information to include in this travel guide on Hawaii? I must include Longitude and Latitude, National Landmarks, Cultural information, etc.. Can anyone give me some ideas and info that has been to the island please?

You should include information on the trade winds and how that creates a windward and leeward side to many of the islands, and how that influences climate.

For national landmarks, you could talk about ‘Iolani Palace, the only former royal residence in the United States.

Cultural info, I don’t know. You could talk about the origin of the native Hawai’ians. They are thought to have arrived from the Marquesas Islands and/or Tahiti.

Highest / lowest elevations (lowest elevation is obviously sea level). Population, population density, high / low temperatures, number of visitors.

I believe most airlines have package discounts and work with a lot of hotel/resorts in the areas. I went last May and had also researched renting vacation condos – these are a good deal especially in the off-seasons (Spring and Fall). We ended up staying at a timeshare resort (called the resort directly) and was given a great rate because they want to get you interested in buying at their property.

Question by no money: Is it possible to travel from islands to islands in Hawaii by water transportation?

Example from the Big Island to Maui island. Is it too far to travel by water transportation?

Currently the only large open ocean vessel is the Hawaii Superferry that runs between Oahu and Maui. Between Maui, Molokai and Lani there are at least two small ferries. Other than that, you have to fly.

cover topics regarding Diamond Head Mountain/ State Park, it’s a beautiful hike
Culturally, Japanese people are everyone on the island. Whites are a minority there.
Crowded, slum areas, no parking,
Whale watching during certain seasons,

Outdoor, Open mall (no roof)
