Of the islands I’ve been to…

Kauai is my favorite. It’s small enough that you can get around easily but not usually too crowded. The south side of the island is kind of touristy, but the north isn’t as much. You can learn to surf, walk/hike to some beautiful waterfalls, and even take helicopter tours.

Hawaii (the big island) is my second favorite. Kona is fantastic. The south tip of the island is also great and has some really cool black sand beaches, and there are sea turtles that you can see while snorkeling. You can also go to the Kilauea (sp?) volcano crater.

Oahu was my least favorite. The few days I were there were really hot and dry, though, so it might be nicer if the weather were a bit cooler. But I didn’t like Honolulu or Diamondhead, and I thought Waikiki was extremely overhyped.

It also depends on your situation. If you’re taking younger kids, I’d recommend the big island. Tweens and teens would probably like Kauai better. And no kids? I’d still say Kauai. But there are some other smaller islands that you should look into as well (Molokai, Lanai, etc.)

Diamond Head is a defining feature of Hawaii. While part of it serves as a platform for antennas used by the U.S. government and is closed to the public, the crater’s proximity to Honolulu makes the rest of it a popular destination. A 0.7 mile (1.1 km) hike leads to the edge of the crater’s rim. The trail winds over uneven rock, through a tunnel and ascends 173 steps. Next is another lighted tunnel and 98 more steps on a spiral staircase inside a coastal artillery observation platform built in 1908.

My friend and I won a trip to Hawaii and we’re both college students and tight on funds. Does anyone know of coupons or discounts for places to visit or eat while we are there?

Aloha! Congrats on winning a trip to paradise!!

If you will be on Oahu, I suggest making sure your hotel room as a fridge and microwave, you will save a ton by stocking up on snacks, breakfast foods and maybe doing a picnic lunch a few days.

Also suggest you try plate lunch, its a local favorite and there are tons of great plate lunch places. Plate lunch is usually a scoop of rice, macaroni salad, slaw and 1-3 meat entrees (pork, kalbi beef, mahi mahi, chicken) lots of choices, and all for or less!

There are lots of local magazines full of coupons, 2-1 dining, or activities, so do grab them whenever you see them. There are also lots of free and/or inexpensive activities on Oahu, Hawaii does not have to be expensive!

Pearl Harbor – free
Tour China Town – free
Hike Diamond Head –
Snorkel Hanauma Bay – (amazing)
Enjoy surf culture on the North shore – free
lots of museums, galleries etc – cheap or free
Drive up Tantalus Mt – free
Waikiki Aquarium
and so much more!!

Me and my soon to be wife are trying to plan a trip to Hawaii for our honeymoon but wanted to know which island is the best to visit for beaches, nightlife, shopping and good food?

I found Expedia.com was cheaper then most other sites.

Call a travel agent, but I am sure it will be more.

Junko and Anthony tagged along with me on a business trip to Hawaii for the 2009 PACOM Information Assurance Conference of the Pacific. While I did not have much of an opportunity to enjoy Hawaii, Junko and Anthony had a blast.

Overall it was a good trip and a refreshing impromptu vacation for the family.

The least expensive island with the most choices of accomodations in all price ranges is Oahu (Honolulu). But it is very crowded there, so I much prefer Maui. Maui is not as crowded as Oahu, but Maui has more choice of hotels and condos and restaurants and activities than Kauai or the Big Island of Hawaii or Lanai or Molokai.

After our baby reaches 1-2 months old, we’d love to take a week’s vacation as a family to Hawaii. We’re hoping to find somewhere private, out of the way and quiet. These factors are more important than cost. Any ideas?

Here’s my list of things and web sites. Use it to decide what is best for you and family:

1. Go to Pearl Harbor to see history at the US Arizona Memorial. You can drive or take the bus there; no need to book a tour. (Oahu Island)

2. If you are on the island of Oahu (where Honolulu and Waikiki beach is) go to the other side of the island to see the great deserted beaches (get a rental car for a day or two).

3. If you go to the Polynesian Cultural Center (Oahu) understand that its run by the Morman church and there are NO alcoholic beverages served there, not even beer. I say skip it and do a Luau instead.

4. If you go to Maui, you gotta do the downhill bike ride. I don’t recommend the sunrise one because you have to get up at 3:00 AM to get started up the mountain and its cold up there that early. If you are a romantic do it, but otherwise no. There are different bike companies and some don’t take you all the way to the top, and some don’t guide you back down. You can come down by yourself, there’s only one road with just a little traffic, but if you are squimish about riding in the street, a company that accompanys you down will help watch the traffic for you. I have been twice and prefer Maui Downhill to the others. These companies have web sites They will pick you up at your hotel, take you to their shop to pick out a wet-suit (for the cold and mist/rain shower maybe) and gloves and helmet; then take you up the mountain; then follow your group down so they can block traffic for your ride; then afterwards take you back to your hotel. Expect this activity to take 75-80% or more of the day.

4. Also in Maui, The Road to Hana is a great drive (you need a rental car). Its a 30 mile winding road that takes 4 hours to drive. Its like driving through the jungle; has a bunch of one lane bridges.

5. On the Big Island of Hawaii: go to the Volcano National Park. Also go see Akaka Falls.

i’m planning one during the month of november… i’ve been there a few times and we found that to be the perfect time to go… each island is something different.

if you want to party, go to honululu (wakiki beach!)

if you want to relax, kawaii.

maui and the big island are good for mixtures
