April 1998 – A trip to Hawaii was interesting.
On occasion, I will try to digitize some personal, historic photos. Prior to 2002, all my images were done chemically. It will take a while to get a representative bunch on flickr.

Good luck! Avoid Spring Break and Summer months…LOL.
My best recommendation would be to rent a vacation home or condo on a beach…ton of em! I use to live in Kailua, Oahu two blocks from Kailua beach and there were a ton of vacation rentals…and it’s a quiet but beautiful beach on the windward side of the island, near Kaneohe. Out of the “touristie” area. Good luck.

Question by Aaron J: Hawaii !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
Has anybody been to HAWAII lately, or does any body live in HAWAII, See I’m going to an acting and modeling school right now and I will be offered commercial jobs and modeling jobs and if I study hard enough then I will be able to get allot of jobs and earn allot of money & I would like to take a trip to HAWAII and hopefully live there some day, so I was wanting to know a few things, is it a little pricey to live there, how are the gas prices, cause in Oklahoma city the gas is about .75 – .00 bucks something like that, when you go buy grocery’s for like every day stuff does it cost allot compared to like Oklahoma City, going out to eat does it cost allot compared to any where else, how is the beach is it a good place to go, ya know like, the people are they nice, do you ever come across problems with rude people or any thing, ya know stuff like that I just want to know to kinda get a hint on what its like & what I have in store for me, Thanks, Aloha

Answer by ladydreamer254
It’s expensive to live here, but not IMPOSSIBLE.
On Oahu certain places have cheaper gas, one being Costco. The neighbor islands also have varying gas prices.
The people are nice, majority. I’ve come across rude people, yes. But that’s a given anywhere you go/live. You will hear the word haole used by us locals, that just means Caucasian. There are Caucasians that are born and raised here, but they are not the majority like up on the mainland (the rest of the states). Asians are. Some haoles forget that little fact.
You will also hear people speaking in what sounds like to you a different language, but this is not so. The language that you hear is called pidgin, and is a form of English (it’s just not the standard). We locals speak pidgin from time to time-mostly for laughs. The only people that do speak that full time are the Samoans, Tongans, and Hawaiians. Give or take a few Filipinos.
The beaches are alright. The one beach that I especially enjoyed was Lanikai. It’s not like Waikiki Beach, crowded. Ala Moana is nice too. You’ll see some trash, but that doesn’t ruin the scenery.
Each island has their own unique characteristic. Oahu is the most developed while Kauai is the most beautiful. The Big Island is, well, big. Maui is amazing. Molokai is old.
The weather’s great (it does get cold but no need to break out the heavy jackets); the food is amazing; you can’t get lost driving; the local entertainment is incredible.
We don’t live in grass shacks or surf to school (seriously some people think we do). We live in houses and drive or take the bus to where ever we have to go. We have highways and freeways. We have our ghetto areas. We wear name brand clothing like Hollister and whatever, and we get cable.
I hope I gave you enough info.

Question by coo dude: Is there a reputable travel agency to help me plan my trip to hawaii?
I have planned a trip with someone online and I have a good price. The problem is I don’t know if this place is legit and I don’t really have any guarantee or something like it that my trip which I promised my wife I would take her on will be as perfect as possible.
Best answer:
Answer by ConcernedCitizen
The only agency I’ve used for a trip to Hawaii was Apple Vacations. They used to offer a price guarantee. If you booked a trip with trip insurance and the price went down, you would get the lower price. They don’t do that any more and I’ve done just as well booking everything on my own since then. If you have doubts about your agency’s pricing, look at airfares and hotel rates on Travelocity. If it’s a condo, you can check for comparable condo rates at http://www.vrbo.com. You can also check http://www.tripadvisor.com for reviews of the accomodations. Room quality can vary a lot, sometimes even within the same complex if the units are individually owned. If you can get a better price without going through the travel agency and the reviews are favorable, go for it.

Anybody know of any good websites that cut you a good deal besides expedia and travelocity? I found plesent holidays website and they seem decent. What suggestions could you give a clueless girl??

Well, if your trip will be confined to the Big Island, then by all means arrange your flights so that you arrive and leave out of Kona (KOA) and save the hassle of connecting in Honolulu. If you go thru Honolulu, its a separate terminal that handles inter-island flights.
Check this section for earlier questions if you’re looking for an inexpensive hotel room in Kailua-Kona. There was a question in the last week and a couple of good suggestions were given.
As for car rentals, I have used www.carrentalsinhawaii.com on several trips and found them to have some of the better rental rates. Shop early, shop frequently and keep checking rates, which tend to fluctuate quite a bit and since they don’t charge a penalty for changing, take advantage of any dip in the rates.
And, of course, travel on Mon-Thurs will tend to get you the best rates on airline tickets, as will travelling after August, when the demand is lower until December. Same is true for hotel room availability and rates.

Question by Mrs. Greenlee: How to plan a 10 day trip to Hawaii when I only want 3 days in a hotel?
A good friend is getting us a timeshare for 7 days. It’ll be 4 days in Honolulu and 3 days in Kauai. I was thinking about getting another 3 days or so somewhere else like Maui and I was trying to do a package deal with that and the airline tickets. Is that possible? I want the flights to be 10 days apart but I don’t want 10 days in the hotel….

How about a condo in Maui, you can rent them in Maui from plus a night. You have a lot of advantages with condos, they’re cheaper, they have a kitchen, you have more room and extras, and you can often find them around great beaches! I have stayed at these condos in Maui, and the beach across the street is fab!

Whar types of things did you want to do?
Some hotels offer food vouchers ask your travel agent. When we went the vouchers were 75.00 per person. They may not volunteer the info. If you are staying in Waikiki. If you rent a car you will save going to places outside the downtown Honolulu area. If you go to the Market in Waikiki for souvenirs, etc. remember they love to barter. Alot of tourists ask what something costs and they pay ir. You can get bargains in there and it is fun. My sister just went and they stayed for 7 days with three kids. Let me ask her and I will add it to my answer.

Depends on when you go and where you’re flying from. Go to one of the travel websites and input your info and see what comes up. That will give you an idea of the cost for airfare and lodging. Try Expedia, Travelocity, VacationsToGo, Orbitz, etc. Or work with a travel agent in your area.
